Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre

Nestled between Currimundi Beach and Currimundi Lake, the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre stands as a revitalised hub for outdoor adventure, sport, and community connection. Following a $7.6 million redevelopment, the centre now offers upgraded accommodation, dining, and activity facilities designed to enhance accessibility, capacity, and the overall visitor experience.

The redevelopment introduced two new accommodation blocks providing 168 beds across 28 rooms, an alfresco dining precinct, multipurpose sports courts, and a refreshed café space, creating a flexible venue capable of hosting everything from school camps to large-scale sporting tournaments.

Project Brief

Designed by Aspect Architects and Project Managers and delivered by Bryant Building Contractors, the project was guided by a vision to create a sustainable, inclusive facility that supports community growth and encourages active lifestyles. Despite challenges such as extreme weather and supply constraints, the team successfully delivered a modern, nature-inspired centre that embodies Queensland’s outdoor culture.

Key Challenges

  • Environmental Conditions: Managing construction amid wet weather and coastal humidity while maintaining build quality.
  • High Usage Requirements: Designing systems to endure continuous use by school, sporting, and community groups.
  • Design Harmony: Integrating robust amenities with biophilic aesthetics that reflect the coastal landscape.
  • Accessibility & Functionality: Ensuring all users,  from students to families, could enjoy safe, functional, and inclusive facilities.
Duracube Solution

To meet the performance and design goals of this large-scale recreation project, DuraCube systems were specified for their proven durability, hygiene, and design flexibility.

The combination of Full Height Privacy Ultra systems and integrated bench seating with coat rails provided a clean, contemporary finish that maximised privacy, comfort, and functionality. The natural colour palette of Classic Grey and Philippine Teak was selected to complement the centre’s biophilic design approach, drawing inspiration from surrounding sand, timber, and vegetation tones.

Built for longevity, DuraCube’s compact laminate systems deliver exceptional moisture resistance and low maintenance, ideal for Queensland’s humid, high-traffic recreation environments.

The Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre now serves as a modern, inclusive space for learning, play, and connection, perfectly aligned with its mission to promote active living and community engagement.

DuraCube’s contribution ensured the amenities met the highest standards of durability, accessibility, and visual cohesion, providing facilities that are both resilient and welcoming. The result is a future-ready centre that supports generations of users across education, sport, and recreation.
