St George Illawarra Dragons

The St George Illawarra Dragons’ $65 million Bruce Gordon Centre represents a landmark investment in elite sporting infrastructure. Located at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus, the purpose-built headquarters unites the NRL, NRLW, and administrative operations under one roof.

Project Brief

The facility serves as a world-class training and community base, featuring two full-sized indoor and outdoor training fields, state-of-the-art gym and recovery facilities, and equal amenities for male and female athletes. The redevelopment commenced in August 2025, with new changerooms and facilities designed to support elite-level competition and daily operational demands.

Key Challenges

An elite sporting facility demands amenities engineered for intensity. At the Bruce Gordon Centre, changeroom systems needed to withstand the frequency and force of daily use by athletes, while meeting the hygiene standards essential to performance and recovery.

Equity was a defining requirement of FDC Constructions’ brief. Male, female, and referee changerooms all needed to be built to the same specification, with no discernible difference in quality, finish, or amenity between them. Storage was another key consideration: in a professional environment, athletes and officials alike require secure, accessible lockers alongside functional seating and coat storage across multiple changeroom zones, without adding congestion during high-turnover periods around training and match days.

While installation proceeded smoothly overall, DuraCube Project Manager Clint Moss ensured all compliance requirements were met by providing structural verification to confirm that the grab rail fixings satisfied stringent safety and load standards.

Duracube Solution

DuraCube proposed its Floor Mounted Overhead Braced (FOB) Partitioning System across every changeroom at the Bruce Gordon Centre, finished in a single DuraSafe 279 Charcoal palette. The floor-anchored, interconnected framework eliminates the structural weak points common in lighter-duty systems, keeping doors and panels rigid under the frequency of use and moisture exposure typical of a professional training facility.

Materialising Populous’ design intent, DuraCube applied one design language across all three changeroom types: male, female, and referee,  a deliberate decision that put the facility’s commitment to equity into physical form. FOB cubicles in Charcoal 279 were paired with matching Bench Seating – Wall with Coat Rail (BSW-C), giving each zone integrated seating and storage at the point of entry to reduce congestion during peak changeover times. Locker – Bench Mounted (LBM) systems completed the fit-out, combining secure, coordinated storage with additional seating in a single space-efficient unit suited to the pace of elite sport.

The 279 Charcoal  finish gives the facility a restrained, professional aesthetic, dark, contemporary, and deliberately understated, in keeping with the calibre of a facility used by elite athletes and match officials. More than a visual choice, the single unified palette across all changeroom zones reinforces the facility’s underlying principle: every user, regardless of gender or role, is provided for identically.

The result is a changeroom solution built to perform under sustained, high-intensity use, delivering the durability, hygiene, and consistency that elite sport demands, while bringing the Dragons’ commitment to equal facilities to life.
